Welcome to the VWH Riding Club

We are a long established friendly club with members  from all   around the Cirencester, Malmesbury and Swindon area.

As a club we cater for all levels of rider, from those who just want to have fun with their horse, new combinations starting their training, through to people competing their horses at any level.

We are affiliated to British Riding Clubs, within Area 9, which enables members to compete in qualifiers of all equestrian disciplines and the chance to qualify for national championships at all levels. We hold regular clinics, residential camps and training days with a variety of instructors to suit all abilities and welcome new members to come and join the fun!

How to join us:

If you would like to join our club, our membership year runs from January - December, please download the membership form here:

Leg Anatomy Evening

On Wednesday 25th April, The George Vet Groups Equine Vets Angela Jones and Ben Wilson provided a fascinating evening for members involving leg anatomy and dissection. They were both thanked enormously for giving up their time to come and demonstrate for us.

We were set up with specimens provided and instructed how to inject fluid into joint cavities and spaces, so that on skinning the limbs you could really appreciate how close to the surface these important structures were. Members were then instructed on how to dissect the Tendons, identify ligaments and bony structures. Comparisons were then be made between limbs and injuries identified.

In true riding club spirit not to be deterred members then enjoyed a pizza feast and social gathering.

What this space for future talks and demonstrations - if you missed this one but would like me to book another date - I can do so if I get enough interest :-)

Jonty Evans Training

Training with International Eventer Jonty Evans was secured for Sunday 11th March at Rectory Farm. Jonty has been eventing internationally for over 20yrs, he finished 9th Individual at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Cooley Rorkes Drift, and was part of the Nations Cup winning team and 8th Individual representing Ireland in Boekelo. He also has a selection of young horses he's bringing up through the levels. When not competing Jonty also does a lot of teaching from Novice horse and rider up to 4*.

In response to his campaign last Autumn to fund raise and keep Cooley Rorkes Drift, the VWH Committee took the decision to make a donation from Club funds and in return secured some training and a fabulous time was had by all.

In addition to the training, Jonty then gave a fabulous talk at the RC AGM on 4th April in Cirencester that was very much enjoyed. Giving a real in site to all the preparation, training and travel involved with getting them to Rio 2016 and life since with the campaign to keep Art and what hopefully lies ahead in the future.

Area 9 Winter Novice Dressage

A huge thank you to every-one who made this competition such a success.

On Sunday 12th November at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre, Gloucester we hosted the Area 9 Novice Winter Dressage. with over 120 competitors including three VWH teams! A fabulous day was had by all with some lovely feedback from competitors so thank you to every-one who volunteered and put so much effort into the day. It was also a great fundraiser for the club.

Well done to Tori - individual 2nd, Sally - individual 4th and both Penny and Mariana 8th. Our best team finishing 4th so well done to all. It was lovely to see so many new faces out competing for the club

Area 9 Combined Training

This event was held at Hartpury College, on what could be called a blustery day however both are teams did a great job. Dressage was outdoors in the wind, whilst the show jumping was in the International Arena, so lots of the youngsters to deal with!

Sadly both teams were just outside the placings however some lovely tests and super show jumping rounds were had by all and some individual placings had. Nia and Cheeko finished 4th, Annitta and Vinny finished 5th, Penny and Marley 6th, and Pip and Heston 6th.

Autumn VWH Residential Camp

This years campers headed to Stockland Lovell Manor Equestrian Centre near Bridgewater from Sunday 24th September - Wednesday 27th September. A super time was had by all, with new cabins, amazing food and brilliant instruction as always, every-one came home having achieved and enjoyed.

We had two fabulous instructors - Polly Williamson and Jon Evans, which meant we had increased numbers attending and smaller groups for more personalised training which was appreciated.

Once again the riding facilities were fantastic with something for every-one and some fabulous photography from Fiona Crawford once more, providing people with memories to treasure.

Camp dates for 2018:

Thursday 15th March - Sunday 18th March

Sunday 23rd September - Wednesday 26th September

National Championship Success

On Saturday 2nd September our 90cm Show Jumping team who were victorious at the qualifier in July headed to Lincoln for the National Championships. Becky riding Boris, Jude riding Benji, Vanessa riding Fred and Sharon riding Western Loder all had a brilliant day to finish a fantastic 5th.

Jude and Benji also competed as an individual in the Elementary Dressage and Novice Riding test doing brilliantly to finish 8th and 9th respectively.

Huge thank you to Judith Wilson who travelled up to Lincoln to be our team volunteer for the day so the team could compete.

Area 9 Horse Trials

The Area 9 Horse Trials took place at West Wilts Equestrian Centre on Sunday 2nd July and was a hugely busy, fun and successful day for the VWH RC.

We entered five teams - two in the 80cm, two in the 90cm and one 100cm. Alongside our entries, the club also ran the Cross Country Start Team so a huge turn out for the club and fantastic team spirit all around.

Our 90cm and 1m teams both finished 2nd, whilst our two 80cm teams finished 5th and 7th, with individual 2nd for Rosie Bathurst, 3rd for Kerry Alexander, 6th for Penny Hall :-)

Huge thank you to every-one who volunteered to help man the start team so that all our teams could compete and to Lynda King for organising all the entries and team managing.
